Final Review

I have just completed reading, "The New Jim Crow" and I have many positive and some negative things to say. Before I get into that I want to say how much this book actually taught me about politics and the terrible system of discrimination that is in effect in our country. I had thought that slavery and discrimination were over and all people had equal rights, however, this book was able to bring light to this cruel system of mass incarceration that is locking up colored people and putting them behind bars for life. I also now understand more clear this concept of racism and how no matter how hard people fight this concept of race and racism will be everlasting.
Positives:
This book had a lot of strengths that made it a very informative and grasping book. Alexander had a clear point of what she was trying to prove with this book and that made is very understandable. On top of her making a clear point, she also provides excellent examples as evidence to back up all her points. This evidence was really helpful in being able to understand all her points. She had written the whole book in this type of format and it made her argument very persuading and is the main reason that I became so intrigued by her points. Like every great book or movie, there are always some flaws to it, and The New Jim Crow is no exception.

Weaknesses:
Michelle Alexander's format of using points backed up with evidence may have been very persuading and beneficial, however, it also had many drawbacks. Becuase she used this same format throughout her whole book it became very repetitive to the point that the book became boring and uninteresting at many points. It had felt as if you were reading a 300-page long essay and at points, I just couldn't read any longer. I feel if Michelle Alexander had changed up her format throughout some parts of the book, it would've made it much more appealing to readers.

Though with this all said, The New Jim Crow was still an exceptional book. So I would 100% still recommend this book to other people because of the lessons it teaches you. Also, I feel many people still do not know the dark caste system that is still present today in our country so this book will be able to make people aware of this. In the end, this book can help bring a stop to this terrible caste system.
